A Brief History of the Church:

A church at Holme Pierrepont, dedicated to St. Edmund is first mentioned in the year 1201.  It is Grade I listed building. It stands adjacent to Holme Pierrepont Hall; within a well-kept grassed churchyard which has some Grade II listed monuments and headstones dating from the late 18th Century. The Lychgate  – a memorial to those who fell in, and returned from, the Great War – is listed Grade II.

The stone-built church is small, and consists of a three bay 13th Century nave arcade, and 2-bay chancel, a west tower, south porch and south-east organ chamber.  It is dominated visually by the 14th Century diagonally-buttressed embattled tower, which is surmounted by a 15th Century well-proportioned stone spire with single large corner finials, and the remains of 3 gargoyles.

Very few traces of the original church remain, for it was almost completely rebuilt in 1666 by the Marquis of Dorchester, and restored 1878-81.  Further restorations were carried out in 1912,  1960, and even more recently in the 21st Century. The present south aisle was the original nave and the Vestry/organ chamber was the original chancel, with the family burial vault of the Dukes of Kingston and Earls Manvers beneath.

The church  has easy access for all, a lavatory for disabled and other worshippers, a food servery,  and a new sound system.

The Church Today

Everyone living in this area has a right to be baptised, married, and to have their funeral service conducted in their parish church. If baptised, they have the right to be entered on the church’s Electoral Roll and vote at its annual meeting, including for the Parochial Church Council which, with the Rector is responsible for Church administration.

The Church is committed to the whole local community and therefore:

Services are mainly those of the  Church of England’s 1662 ‘Book of Common Prayer’ (BCP), although on the second Sunday of the month, there is a Family Service, designed for families with children, which is less formal. Communion, Matins and Evensong are normally sung, with a full Choral Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month. A robed choir leads the  services, which are at 11.00 am and 6.30 pm. each Sunday, with extra services at Christmas and Easter.

The Future

From January 1st 2006 the Parish of Lady Bay and the Parish of Holme Pierrepont with Adbolton were joined to form the new Benefice of Lady Bay with Holme Pierrepont and Adbolton. The Vicar of Lady Bay, the Revd Robert Breckles also became its first Rector. The two churches, All Hallows and St. Edmunds  each have their own PCCs and parish responsibilities but only the one Vicar. It is expected that closer working  will be developed as times goes by.

We welcome everyone to all our services.

More information on the church is available in the Statement of Significance written in June 2010 which is now available in pdf format to view or download by clicking here.
